the good and the bad.
well, the good news is that the doula training two weeks ago was fantastic! the course was very inspiring. i am still a little nervous about taking on a client. i am mentally preparing myself to seek out opportunities. i figure, to keep working at the library, i can really only take on one client anyway.
not that i am a great public speaker or anything, but this morning a co-worker and i gave a presentation to a group of teachers on how to use the library's resources. the topic was simple, but i was reminded how much i enjoy training-type situations. my first job out of college was as a bookseller and assistant trainer at borders. i really loved training new employees. maybe i could go around giving little presentations on topics i know things about. that would probably be fun. speaking in public makes me really nervous when i don't really know what i'm talking about, or if the groups are too big, but talking about things i know well to small/medium sized groups of friendly people sounds fantastic.
and the bad news is that i had a weird and rapidly-progressing problem with my gum tissue. i had to go to a periodontist who then performed a gum tissue implant. they used freezed-dried connective tissue harvested from a cadaver! so, my mouth looks disgusting and my smile is goofy. it doesn't quite hurt, but it is a little sore. i also suffered a bad fall this weekend. it had been a long time since i had a good scrape-'em-up fall. I skinned my elbow very deeply and my knee to a lesser extent.
worse, i dropped my lovely sony clie. the screen shattered right over the writing interface, so it doesn't work at all. we only purchased the one-year protection plan, and it's been a year and a half. drats. i really loved my clie. and sony stopped making them. (companies always seem to stop making the things i love the most. i guess my values are in opposition to the values of the majority of consumers.) perhaps it is all an experiment in letting go.

awww man...claire!!! i'm sorry about your gums and fall. :(
here's something to look forward to: why don't you (seriously) come to bolivia with me? my dates are set! i am to depart houston (!) on september 19, returning (via houston) to DC on October 2.
now's your chance. carpe do it.
What kind of hand-held device shatters when you drop it? Did they not think that people would ever drop them? That's bad design if you asked me.
added incentive - if you book now, tix are only $700, and you have free lodging and food while there!!
you're kidding, right justin? bad design for them would be to design something that's robust and never breaks. that way you'd never have to buy more of their products. sheesh.
i don't think it was poor design. i've dropped it in a regular kind of way many times and it's been fine. this was a spectacular fly through the air, spin around, skirt over the head, skin sliding along the concrete kind of fall. the pda flew up and thenhit hard on the bottom corner. even as i myself was thudding down, i heard the crash of the pda and could tell it wouldn't be pretty. the shattering of the screen radiates out from the corner where it fell, and is really pretty contained, considering its fall. if it had fallen on the top corner, away from the interface, it would probably still work. just bad luck for me.
bolivia is very tempting. i am going to talk to my work and make sure they are willing to let me go for two weeks. i know it is just part-time, and i complain about it, but it has gotten a little better lately and i am not quite ready to give it up. i have been kind of pushing the limits lately with dr. appointments and car repairs, but i will talk to them today. thank you. it means a lot to be invited.
bolivia.....bolivia.....
time's running out - have you bought your tickets yet?
